Welcome to The Food Safety Company.

We are a food safety consultancy offering bespoke food safety consultancy services providing sensible, realistic solutions to ensure you gain high food hygiene rating scores and keep your business compliant.

Strive for 5 with Food Safety Company

Our customers include food-related business of all types, including restaurants, hotels, clubs, pubs, cafes, fast-food outlets, canteens, delicatessens, other food retailers.

100% of food businesses in England must, by law, be inspected and then rated by Environmental Health Practitioners from the local council. Ratings are published by the Food Standard Agency.

Over 50% of the public now use food hygiene ratings to help choose where to eat. These are shared on social media and have become a massive influence.

38% of people say that if even their favourite food outlet had scored a Food Hygiene Rating of 3 out of 5 (‘generally satisfactory’) or less they would stop visiting altogether. Attitudes to food hygiene are so strong that even customer loyalty cannot prevail against a poor Food Hygiene Rating.

44% of people will even turn away when they reach a food outlet they had planned to visit and try somewhere else, according to the same research.

Almost two thirds of people (61%) won’t visit a restaurant of any sort that had a Food Hygiene Rating of 2 or less.

Whether you are an established business or just starting out, The Food Safety Company can help you achieve good Food Hygiene Ratings so that customers keep coming through the door.

STRIVE FOR FIVE – Get Ready for Inspection

We conduct an on-site audit – prior to the Council’s official Food Hygiene Rating inspection – of all food storage, preparation areas including cellars and bars to ensure you are ready for your scheduled inspection visit. This will include examination of all your existing food safety systems and control sheets.

Within five working days of the audit we will provide a report which lists all problems found at the time of the visit and a “to-do” list for you. This will detail the corrective actions you should take to get the best possible Food Hygiene rating from the Council – aiming for a 5 star Food Hygiene Rating.

IMPROVE MY FOOD HYGIENE RATING – Recovery Assistance Audit

If you have received a poor Food Hygiene rating following your scheduled inspection, we will complete a full on-site audit and report to determine what you need to do, in line with the Council inspector’s report to improve you rating.

We will hold your hand and provide guidance through the whole process to help you improve your Food Hygiene score before your next scheduled inspection or before requesting a rescore visit. This will include liaison with the Environmental Health Officer (EHO) at your local council.

OPEN WITH A FIVE – Start with Success

For a new start-up business, we will visit you and complete a full report telling you what to do before you open in order to achieve a 5 star Food Hygiene rating at your initial inspection. This will include advice on layout, structure and design.

Of critical importance to achieving a good Food Hygiene rating, we will prepare a Food Safety Management System (FSMS) – a mandatory item required by your Council’s Environmental Health Officers. This will be bespoke to your business and includes the full set of documentation daily check-lists you will need to demonstrate that your food-related operations are being conducted in compliance with the best Food Hygiene principles.

As part of this service we will help you through the registration process – including helping you to liaise with Environmental Health Officers prior to their initial visit(s).

THRIVE WITH A FIVE –  Continued Compliance Contract

We will conduct regular, unannounced visits to ensure staff stay on their toes and that Food Hygiene standards don’t drop after an inspection. After each visit you will be provided with a report, listing all actions you must do to ensure compliance at all times.

After completing many of our own self-audits with new customers, we decided that it would be beneficial for our Company to employ an independent auditor/company that would analyse our working practices and help us to refine our systems and existing HACCPS. We are an SME in Shropshire and the Company was formed in 2001, so over the last 17 years we have supplied many prestigious high street names such as Selfridges and Harrods, along with Michelin-starred Chefs and Restaurants. We felt we would benefit from being able to present our Food Safety Manual in a professional andlogical fashion, demonstrating that we have everything in place to help us supply such establishments with the best possible quality products and service.

The Food Safety Company have helped us to achieve our aims and we are eternally grateful for their no-nonsense, logical approach to the minefield that HACCPS can become when your operation changes year on year. We now have concise and clear cut policies, clearly documented and easy to understand HACCPS, and although we do not have BRC accreditation we are more than happy to invite inspection of our new Food Safety Policies and Manual which will easily stand close scrutiny and represents our business ethic very well.

We therefore do not hesitate to recommend The Food Safety Company to anyone looking to achieve the same level of professionalism that we have described above!

We at Slater’s Country Inn have found the services of The Food Safety Company invaluable in helping us maintain our Food safety standards whilst retaining our level 5 food hygiene rating.

We have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending The Food Safety Company to any hospitality or food outlet, for support with food hygiene issues. They offer sensible, realistic and practical solutions to ensure compliance with current food safety legislation and are very good value for money.

I was introduced to Christina a couple of years ago at a networking event and she became an immediate advocate for Alice charity due to her inherent compassion. In March 2017 we opened our People’s Pantry in Newcastle town centre, a flexible food bank to support local, vulnerable families. We knew that we had an increasing demand for food support but knew nothing about operating a food bank, and the prospect of Environmental Health and Food Hygiene terrified us. So we turned to Christina to support us with our People’s Pantry launch and her coaching, training, guidance and support resulted in the People’s Pantry opening on time, with all the required Environmental Health and Food Hygiene documentation and training completed. When the Pantry was inspected by Environmental Health soon after opening, we were immediately awarded 5 stars.

I cannot stress enough how Christina’s support during this launch helped us. Her training and coaching to the team was always delivered with passion and professionalism, but also always with fun and kindness. Christina immediately understood that our volunteers came from very different backgrounds, and needed a lot of reassurance and patience during their training, which Christina has in buckets. Christina also developed a cleaning program from us that is easy for the team to understand and maintain.

We have since opened a number of toddler groups and always consult her for guidance on the kitchen facilities within the venues that we hire.

We plan to open more People’s Pantry in 2018 and will immediately revert to Christina for her support.

We can recommend Christina without hesitation – she turns the scary world of Food Hygiene in to an accessible, readily understood process, and supports you through every step of the process.

Steph Talbot, CEO Alice Charity, Stoke on Trent

When we purchased our tearoom late September as two individuals who had never had any experience in running a Tearoom myself and Jayne my wife knew that one of the first things we should do is to find someone who could come out and ‘point us in the right direction’ when it comes to dealing with the very important issue of Food Hygiene and how we construct our Food Safety Management Programme. The research we completed highlighted the skills of Christina at the Food Safety Company and following a couple of telephone calls we were able to secure the services of Christina.

Prior to the meeting with Christina she emailed through some pointers of the areas that we should review prior to her visit and also confirmed that she would provide us with a template that we could use going forward for the business. The meeting itself was very educational and Christina not only discussed with us the significance of the Food Safety Management Programme, but more importantly how would impact on our Individual business giving us excellent feedback on not only where we were doing things well but also were we needed to improve to help us get that 5 rating. Following the meeting, we were provided an excellent Audit report which allowed us to put into our Programme all of the areas that we were falling short on giving us every opportunity to achieve a 5 rating at our first attempt. Just three weeks after Christina’s visit we had our first Food Hygiene visit and achieved a 5 rating in the main we feel due to the support that we were given by Christina at the Food Safety Company.

With the fantastic support at very reasonable rates, we would have no hesitation to recommend The food Safety Company to any other Food establishment that wishes to obtain a 5 Rating for Food Hygiene.

The Food Safety Company have acted as Nantwich Food Festival’s food safety advisors since 2014. Christina Ratcliffe and her team provide us with an efficient, clear, friendly and professional service.  As the Festival’s Exhibitor Coordinator I found Christina’s support invaluable in taking away some of the pressure of my role as she liaises with Environmental Heath Officers both before and during the Festival and gives information and support to our exhibitors to ensure compliance with regulations. Her detailed feedback enables me to make any necessary adjustments to our ongoing planning.

I would fully recommend the Company and look forward to a continuing professional relationship with Christina.

John Coulter, Director Nantwich Food Festival

We are an independent hotel and restaurant based in Newcastle-under-Lyme who utilised the services of The Food Safety Company prior to our Environmental Health Officer (EHO) inspection in July 2017. Christina offers a professional and confidential service and was a pleasure to work with throughout. We were provided with an extremely detailed and comprehensive food safety audit report following the visit. We implemented all of the recommendations offered to us and this allowed us to maintain our five star food hygiene rating. I would highly recommend Christina’s services for businesses looking to achieve those all important scores on the doors.
